From the Principal

Dear Parents and Students,

It is my pleasure to welcome you to Shiva International Residential School: those families who join us this session, and those who return to us after the break. On behalf of the staff and the management of the School, I extend to each of you a warm and sincere welcome.

Our purpose has not changed since the day the School opened. We undertake to give every student a sound education, through lessons that are thorough and demanding, and to draw out the ability that lies within each of them. We want our students to leave us confident, knowledgeable and responsible, ready to take their place in a world that will not wait for them.

To that end, our teachers attend to the foundations first: reading with fluency and understanding, writing with clarity, and working with numbers with confidence. Upon those foundations we build the qualities that a good education must also give: the ability to think for oneself, to speak and to listen well, to work alongside others, and to treat people of different backgrounds and views with respect. We hold these in as much regard as marks, and we say so.

Through the year the School gathers for its assemblies, its celebrations, its exhibitions of work and its performances on the stage. I ask parents to join us whenever they can. The daily life of the School is meant to be orderly, kind and purposeful, and it is my wish that every student should look forward to each day spent here.

Parents have a large part in this. I ask you to talk with your child each evening about the day at school, to look at the almanac and the homework together, and to see that your child sleeps enough to be ready for the morning. Students, for their part, are asked to come each day with an open mind and a willingness to work. That is all we ask; it is also a great deal.
