Eighteen Years of Building
Institutions That Matter
The story of the Shiva Group of Institutions, from a single conviction in 2007 to seven institutions, thousands of students, and Bilaspur’s most ambitious school yet.
From a Single Vision
to Seven Institutions
The story of the Shiva Group of Institutions is, at its heart, the story of one conviction held firmly across two decades: that the students of District Bilaspur deserve access to education of genuine quality, and that if no one else will build the institutions to provide it, then someone must.
That someone was Mr. Purushotam Sharma. Beginning his professional life in infrastructure and groundwater development, Mr. Sharma turned his attention to education in 2007 with the founding of District Bilaspur’s first B.Ed. College. It was the first of seven institutions, each one the first of its kind in the district, built over eighteen years under the Shiva Educational Society.
Today, the Shiva Group encompasses a B.Ed. College, an Engineering College, a Polytechnic Institute, a Pharmacy Institute, an Ayurvedic Medical College, a Veterinary Pharmacist Training Institute, a CBSE-affiliated day school at Ghumarwin with over 1,400 students, whose alumni have gone on to IITs, NITs, and AIIMS, and, since 2024, Shiva International Residential School in Bilaspur: the district’s first CBSE-affiliated day-cum-boarding school.
Every First
in Bilaspur
Every institution below was the first of its kind in District Bilaspur at the time of its founding. This is not coincidence, it is the defining logic of the Shiva Group: to go where no institution has gone before.
Service as
a Founding Value
The Shiva Group has never understood its purpose as purely commercial or even purely educational. Mr. Sharma has consistently directed the Group’s resources toward the communities it serves, particularly those at the margins of those communities.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Group converted its hospital facilities into Bilaspur’s first dedicated COVID Care Centre, distributing food and essential rations to families in need. Monthly langar service continues at AIIMS Bilaspur. Free medical camps are organised regularly. Scholarships are provided to students who cannot meet their educational costs unaided.
Mr. Sharma serves as President of Chetna Sanstha, Bilaspur, an organisation dedicated to the dignity and upliftment of persons with disabilities and those from socially and economically marginalised backgrounds. Under the DDU-GKY programme, more than 800 students from underserved areas have been trained, and over 500 have secured employment at national companies.
These commitments are not peripheral to the story of the Shiva Group. They are its character, and they are the character that SIRS, as its newest institution, is built to cultivate in its own students.
