School Terms & Assessment

The academic year at Shiva International Residential School is divided into two terms. Student progress is assessed continuously across both terms through periodic tests, half-yearly and annual examinations, and classroom-based evaluation, in accordance with CBSE guidelines.

The Two Terms

The academic year begins in April and concludes in March. It is structured across two terms, each with its own schedule of periodic assessments and a formal examination at its close.

Held within the term. Covers the Term 2 syllabus to that point.

Continuous assessment components evaluated throughout the term.
Annual Examination
Formal written examination held in March, covering the full year’s syllabus. For Class X, this is replaced by the CBSE Board Examination.

How Students Are Assessed

Assessment at SIRS follows the CBSE framework, distributing evaluation across multiple components throughout the year rather than placing the full weight on a single examination.

Periodic Tests

Written tests conducted within each term on the portion of the syllabus covered to that point. Results contribute to the internal assessment total.

Half-Yearly Examination

A formal written examination at the close of Term 1 in September, covering all subjects taught during the first half of the academic year.

Annual Examination

A formal written examination at the close of Term 2 in March, covering the full academic year’s syllabus. Applicable to Classes I through IX.

Continuous Assessment

Class participation, notebook maintenance, subject enrichment activities, and project work are assessed throughout both terms as part of the internal component.

The structure of formal assessment varies by stage, reflecting the increasing rigour of the CBSE programme as students progress from Foundation to Secondary.

Board Class X Annual Examination is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi.   Internal Class IX Annual Examination is conducted by the School.
