Model United Nations

The Model United Nations programme at SIRS engages students in structured committee simulations based on the procedures of the United Nations. Students research country positions, draft formal documents, and debate global issues in committee.

What is Model United Nations?

Model United Nations is an educational simulation in which students assume the roles of country delegates and participate in committee debates structured around United Nations procedures. Each committee addresses a defined agenda topic drawn from international affairs, and delegates are assigned country positions to research and represent.

Within a committee, delegates deliver formal speeches, enter into caucuses, negotiate with other delegations, and draft working papers that are debated and put to a vote. The process requires students to build working knowledge of their country’s foreign policy, treaty positions, and relationships with other states.

How a MUN Conference Works

1
Background Guide

Delegates receive a study guide outlining the committee agenda. This is the starting point for all preparation.

2
Country Research

Each delegate researches their assigned country’s position, including its foreign policy, treaty commitments, and prior UN statements.

3
Position Paper

Delegates write a formal position paper articulating their country’s stance. This is submitted before the conference.

4
Committee Debate

Delegates deliver speeches, enter moderated and unmoderated caucuses, and negotiate with other delegations to build consensus.

5
Resolutions

Working papers are drafted, debated, amended, and put to a committee vote to produce a final resolution.

What Students Develop

Research

Reading primary sources and synthesising a country’s policy position from multiple documents.

Negotiation

Working across delegations to build consensus and draft resolutions that satisfy multiple positions.

Critical Thinking

Evaluating arguments and constructing counter-positions in real-time, under time constraint.

Global Awareness

Engaging with live international issues across areas such as climate, security, human rights, and trade.
