School Terms
& Assessment

How the academic year is structured at SIRS, how student progress is assessed across the year, and what families can expect at each stage of the school calendar.

The Academic Year

How the Year
Is Structured

The academic session at SIRS runs from April to March, in line with CBSE norms. The school operates a six-day week, Monday to Saturday. School hours for Nursery to UKG are 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. For Classes I to X, hours are 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

The year is organised into two broad terms, a first term running through to September, and a second term from October through to March. Each term includes formal assessments that allow teachers and families to track progress steadily across the year rather than relying on a single end-of-year result.

“We measure progress steadily across the year, so that every student, and every family, knows where they stand at every stage.”

Assessment Structure

How Progress
Is Measured

SIRS follows the CBSE assessment framework across all classes. Students are assessed through a combination of periodic tests and formal examinations across the year, so that no single examination carries disproportionate weight, and so that both teachers and families have a clear, continuous picture of each student’s progress.

Classes I – VIII
Four assessments across the year
Two periodic tests and two major written examinations, a mid-term in September and an annual examination in March, distributed across the full academic year. Each contributes a defined weightage to the annual result.
Classes IX – X
Board-level preparation
The scheme at Classes IX and X is aligned to CBSE Board Examination requirements, combining internal assessment maintained through the year with a formal written examination. Class X students also sit pre-board examinations before the Board Examination itself.
I
Ongoing Classroom Assessment
Day-to-day observation by class teachers, through classwork, homework, and participation, gives a continuous picture of each student’s understanding. This informs how teaching is adjusted, and how additional support is directed.
II
Periodic Tests
Formal written tests conducted twice across the year, covering the syllabus completed to the date of the test. Results are communicated to parents and contribute to the annual result.
III
Mid-Term & Annual Examinations
Formal written examinations held in September and March respectively. The Annual Examination covers the full year’s syllabus. The qualifying mark is 33% in each subject. Students who do not achieve this are eligible to sit a supplementary examination.
IV
Co-Scholastic Assessment
In keeping with CBSE norms, student participation in sport, creative arts, and school community life is also part of the school record. A student’s engagement with the full life of SIRS is noted and valued alongside academic performance.
Our Approach

Assessment as
Guidance

At SIRS, assessment results are treated as information, not verdicts. A student who performs below expectation in a periodic test receives focused attention and support before the next assessment. A student who excels is given the opportunity to go further. Progress reports are issued to families after each formal examination, and real-time access to attendance and academic records is available through the school’s ERP Portal throughout the year.

Families with specific questions about how their child is assessed, or about the school’s approach to student progress, are welcome to speak with the Principal directly. Our door is open.
